Transport-related Fringe Benefits: Implications for Commuting and Relocation

چکیده
Transport-related Fringe Benefits: Implications for Commuting and Relocation Fringe benefits of various kinds have become an essential element of modern labour market mechanisms. Firms offer transport-related fringe benefits such as transport subsidies (company cars, travel and parking subsidies) and relocation subsidies to job applicants. The spatial implications of these fringe benefits have hardly received any systematic attention thus far. The present paper addresses this largely unexplored issue. Using information from a survey on firms’ recruitment behaviour in the UK, this paper demonstrates that the applicants’ journey-to-work time induces firms to offer various transport-related fringe benefits to job applicants. The implications of these transport-related fringe benefits for commuting and relocation are rather distinct. Transport subsidies discourage applicants, whereas relocation subsidies induce applicants to move closer to the workplace. We interpret the results as evidence that employers offer transport-related fringe benefits either to reduce the length of the journey to work or to compensate employees for the incurred commuting costs.

Commuting and Reimbursement of Residential Relocation Costs
We develop an equilibrium job search model in which employees incur commuting costs, and residential relocation is costly. We demonstrate that firms partially compensate workers for the incurred relocation costs to avoid paying compensation for commuting costs when house prices do not fully compensate the commuting costs. Taxing reimbursement of relocation costs at a higher rate than reimbursem...
متن کاملMotivations for active commuting: a qualitative investigation of the period of home or work relocation
BACKGROUND Promoting walking or cycling to work (active commuting) could help to increase population physical activity levels. According to the habit discontinuity and residential self-selection hypotheses, moving home or workplace is a period when people (re)assess, and may be more likely to change, their travel behavior. Research in this area is dominated by the use of quantitative research m...

INTRODUCTION Walking and cycling bring health and environmental benefits, but there is little robust evidence that changing the built environment promotes these activities in populations. This study evaluated the effects of new transport infrastructure on active commuting and physical activity. STUDY DESIGN Quasi-experimental analysis nested within a cohort study. متن کاملAn Empirical Study of “Fringe Benefits” and Performance of the Korean Firms
This paper examines the effects of fringe benefits in the compensation package on performance of the Korean firms. Theoretically, fringe benefits have two implications in relation to employees: they are effective instruments that provide incentives; at the same time, some fringe benefits, especially the power-related benefits, are often used for exploitation of self-interests. Using a six-year ...
